Black Hawk was a Sauk leader best known for his role in the Black Hawk War of 1832. His most outstanding accomplishment was leading a resistance against U.S. expansion into Sauk territory, attempting to reclaim lands in Illinois that had been ceded under disputed treaties. Despite his forces being outmatched, Black Hawk demonstrated strategic resilience, notably in battles like Stillman's Run. After his capture, he became a symbol of Native American resistance. His autobiography, dictated after the war, was one of the first Native American memoirs, preserving his perspective for future generations. He died in 1838.
